I don't think I've ever taken for granted that I live in one of the world's best cycling cities. Jumping on my bike every morning, I feel the sense of freedom known only to those who are smug in the knowledge they will never be late to work due to traffic congestion or problems with public transport. The city is so completely set up for cyclists, it's no wonder that half of Copenhagen's commuters choose this method of transport to get to and from work and that bicycle helmets are a fashion item. Even those with a commute of over 10km are encouraged to cycle to work, with a new 'cycle super highway' being set up around the city. Add to this the prohibitive costs of owning and running a car in this country, and you begin to understand the economic reasons for such a choice. The freedom of being able to get where I want, when I want, coupled with the energy boost an early morning cycle ride brings to my day, is the reason I will never take cycling in this wonderful city for granted.
